Good oral hygiene and regular visits for dental examination are important for keeping your teeth and gums in a good health. At our initial examination we will discuss your personal dental condition and help you to make informed decision about the available treatment options. We will also give you advice on how to best take care of your teeth and gums, on which toothbrush and mouthwash to use in order to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
During your regular visits, we will have the time for you to ask any questions you may be having. We will do a routine dental examination, oral cancer examination, and any necessary x-rays. We will also assess the appearance of your teeth and if necessary, recommend cosmetic or orthodontic procedures that may best fit your needs and help improve your appearance.
Good oral hygiene and dental care routine at home is also vital for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Teeth brushing and flossing after meals can help remove plaque that can eventually cause tooth decay and gum disease. Because the plaque and calculus build up can be hard to remove, even with good oral hygiene, regular visits are necessary to monitor dentition.
We recommend that you visit us every 6 months for regular cleanings and preventive treatments. Prevention is better and cheaper than cure. The more regularly we will see you for your general dental cleanings and examination, the less often you will have to see us for anything else!
Fissure sealants (a special plastic coatings that cover and seal more difficult to keep clean pits and fissures on chewing surfaces of teeth) and Fluoride varnishes (pale yellow gel that sets quickly when applied to children’s teeth using a soft brush) are additional form of preventing tooth decay that we offer for our younger and older children patients.
In Gretna Dental Practice we believe that prevention is better than cure.
However if your teeth do have decay and need a filling then we can offer a wide range of dental materials to replace the missing structure of your teeth: amalgam and more cosmetic white restorations, veneers and high quality aesthetic crowns and bridges.
Periodontal treatment is available with our Dr Katerina Balani. Katerina completed her Master’s degree in Periodontology and Biology of Implants at Aristotle University, Greece in 2004.
Periodontal disease is a problem which affects many of our patients and is mainly the result of infection and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In its early stage it is called gingivitis. The gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. In its more serious form, called periodontitis, the gums can pull away from the teeth, bone can be lost, and if left untreated the teeth may become loose or fall out. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the two biggest threats to dental health.

In addition to Periodontal Treatment, Katerina Balani provides Endodontic Treatment services (i.e. Root Canal Treatment) at Gretna Dental Practice.
If the nerve inside a tooth is irreversibly damaged, or there is bacteria inside the nerve space of a tooth, root canal treatment is a treatment to clean this area in order to save the tooth from pain or further infection.
If a tooth has previously had a root filling and it is painful or infected again, it may be appropriate to repeat the root filling (endodontic re-treatment). Depending upon the state of a tooth, the prognosis of re-treatment can be as good as conventional root canal treatment. The alternative to root canal treatment would be to have a tooth extracted.
Dr Balani is committed to providing professional and quality endodontic care using an evidence based approach and contemporary techniques.

Gretna Dental Practice provides a variety of cosmetic services to enhance your smile using the most contemporary technology and techniques.
Dental veneers are a thin, semitransluscent tooth shaped “shell” that are custom made of porcelain. They are permanently bonded to your natural teeth in order to enhance their shape, colour, length or size. Veneers can improve the appearance of teeth with large restorations, teeth that are discoloured, misshaped or misaligned, chipped, cracked or with unattractive shape.
In Gretna Dental Practice we can offer colour matching, highly aesthetic veneers.
Sometimes in order achieve best aesthetic result, dental crowns can be recommended. In Gretna Dental Practice we offer options of bright, translucent, white tooth-coloured porcelain based crowns in cases of:
• non satisfactory aesthetics of large tooth restoration
• restoring shape and function of teeth after root canal treatment
• to save a tooth that has been so damaged by decay that it can’t support a filling
• stubborn tooth discoloration or defective enamel
• teeth chipped, cracked or with unattractive shape
• to restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
• protect the teeth of a child at high risk for tooth decay, especially when a child has difficulty keeping up with daily oral hygiene.
We are pleased to offer Composite Bonding with our principal Dentist, Dr Anna Arczynska. Anna participated in many courses on the latest techniques for this procedure.
Composite Bonding (also known as cosmetic bonding or dental bonding) is a very conservative dental treatment and is a less invasive procedure, than the alternatives such as crowns and veneers.
Bonding is used to improve the appearance of teeth by concealing imperfections such as chips or cracks, closing gaps, or improving the colour of the teeth.
Composite bonding can sometimes be carried out in just one visit and is a fast and effective way to fix minor cosmetic issues and can help you achieve a smile you’re happier with.
